Biodiversity

Internationally 2010 has been declared the year of Biodiversity. Rooibos is produced in two of the most sensitive floral kingdoms in the world. The Cape Fynbos biome; which contain 9500 species, of which 70% are endemic and The Succulent Karoo; which contain 3500 species, of which 69% are endemic.

It is therefore of paramount importance that Rooibos is produced in such a manner as to guarantee the intergrity of the ecology while at the same time accommodating market growth.

It is a balance between  People-Planet-Profit and involves production of Rooibos in a sustainable manner.

Actions and projects

In 2007 the Rooibos Industry decided to take action to stop harmfull practices leading to habitat transformation. The journey to sustainable Rooibos production is a collaborative process involving a number of supporting organisations.
  • SARC (South African Rooibos Council) www.sarooibos.co.za
  • CapeNature - www.capenature.org.za
  • WWWF-SA - www.wwf.org.za
  • Conservation International - www.conservation.org
  • Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands
  • Environmental Monitoring Group - www.emg.org.za
  • CAPE (Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund) - www.cepf.net
  • C.A.P.E - www.capeaction.org.za
The result of this process was the Rooibos Biodiversity Initiative Project which was brought to life. Soon after completion of a policy document a pilot program involving 36 rooibos producers was launched.

Maskam Redbush is fully committed to this project. We have been part of the pilot program from start and have been audited by the RBI. Implementation of Best Practice Guidelines are an ongoing action within our group and we embrace our responsibility to produce sustainable rooibos in harmony with nature.

We urge all buyers in the supply chain to support the Biodiversity Initiative Project.
